How to spot a scam

by | Sep 30, 2025

This week’s blog post is on scams. I have seen many Small Claims Cases based on scams. As a paralegal practicing in Small Claims and an individual I have learned professionally and unfortunately personally as well quiet a bit about scam artists, that I will share with you.

  1. Scam artists are not patient. If you are saying I could do it in a week they will either logically show you what a mistake it is to wait, or they will pull at your heart strings to make you do it immediately.
  2. If you tell them how difficult your situation is scam artists will work, it to their advantage of why to use them.
  3. They do not care about you, I once had one who was impersonating a friend of mine, the friend had promised I could trust them with a specific feeling. When I interrupted the conversation with my feeling the scam artist ignored me and that was how I figured out something was wrong.
  4. They change their info and do not have an address on their website or socials. They are ghosts, which makes court even harder.
  5. They tell you things too good to be true, if it sounds too good to be true it is.
  6. What they are asking for often does not make sense or you have paid similar already. If it does not feel right do not do it.
