Taxes are annually you know you will need to do them once a year or HST sometimes quarterly. The rest of the year flows by until its been 12+months and you realize its that time again. Life happens in the middle.
Bookkeeping is ongoing life happens as it’s getting done. Your mindset as you are doing it is influenced by your life happenings, sometimes you forget yourself and type in something completely unrelated to your books and business. It’s predictable.
When I see someone’s books, I can see so much more about them than I can when I review taxes. The taxes tell me their gross and net annual income and any expenses the CRA actually cares about like rent/mortgage/property tax, medical, kids, charities and business.
The books tell me, what they spend their money on, what they enjoy doing, (do they take their clients out and have lots of meals and entertainment?), how much advertising they do and if they much of a life outside the business. Their industry tells me their personality, I know tutors and teachers like kids and are nurtures for the most part, I web design and interior design people are crafts, I know the business people like perfectibility and working in their own little office or talking to adults. Once I know what they enjoy doing I know how to engage them in conversation, what kind of tax information they will care about and what their lifestyle is. I can make them into a “person” instead of a “client” which is what every single person deserves.
