I recently had to do four back years of taxes for a client. The client is on O.D.S.P. (Ontario Disability Support Program). They were ready to stop her file because her back taxes were not clear and had majour errors. C.R.A. was claiming she owed tens of thousands and she had not filed 2024 or 2025. In the course of a week. I went through and requested that C.R.A. review her taxes and only one of those years needed more information. Which was a year that had been audited twice already.
It is not only important to file your taxes but it is even more important to ensure that they are accurate and correct. C.R.A. knows your income and many expenses because of T forms. This makes lying either advertantly or inadvertantly very risky. If you are on any type of assistance the situation is magnied. Make sure your tax professional is familiar with your tax situations. If you have a small business, make sure they know how to do that. If you are on assistance, make sure they are familiar with that, and especially be sure they know all the credits and benefits your family is entitled to.
Just because someone is good at employment taxes, doesn’t mean they know families, businesses or social assistance. Always ask questions. Tax Errors are very dangerous, think of them like a financial cancer. Get help from the right people and avoid tax errors all together.
