The new Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow proposed a one-time housing benefit. Doug Ford have been working on financially supporting this program. The goal of this program is to improve the impacts of the Toronto housing crises. While I agree that our housing situation needs attention a one-time benefit will not helpwith the impacts of the Toronto Housing Crises.
What we really need to do is to put the money designated for this one time benefit toward the Canadda Ontario Housing Benefit (COHB). Previously the CHOB was known as the Portal Housing benefit. The program was started in 2018. This is a monthly benefit is re-evaluated annually, thus actually helping low-income people with rent and is scam proof. Scam proof is very important as we have seen from the covid enefits scandal. Further to the housing issue with residents can wait years for housing there is a benefit that you can get within twelve months specifically for newcomers. In summary we need to deal with the core issue and make housing more affordable.
.In order to recieve this benefit, you have to be contacted by the city. They send you an application, which you send back completed. Than they review all of your accounts, including ban and social assistance if applicable. Like Ontario Works and Ontario Disbility you receive the money direct deposited and monthly statements.
